Species
The Myrmica rubra is also called the common red stinging ant. A well-known home-grown ant! Our ant colonies consist of a queen together with brood and a number of workers. This number depends on the number of eggs that have developed into an ant (egg-larva-pupa-ant). This colony already contains 50+ workers.
The colonies are polygynous, which means that there can be multiple gynes, queens, in a nest (not necessary). This colony has 2 gynes, which are only slightly larger than normal workers.
Please note, these ants have a very clear seasonal distribution, so it may happen that a colony has little (or even no) brood in the autumn and winter period. That comes with higher temperatures in the spring!

Myrmica rubra is a fun species to keep, but clearly more difficult than, for example, Lasius niger or Messor barbarus. We guarantee that the queen and ants will arrive alive, but we cannot go further than that. A colony of Myrmica rubra can die out within a few days if conditions are wrong (particularly if conditions are too dry). Therefore, the lifespan clearly depends on the method of housing and care. If something is wrong upon receipt, that is of course our responsibility and at our risk. This must be reported to us within 24 hours (after receipt) with clear photos.
