Watch as the ants do their work and dig through the gel like in their normal underground habitat. The ant farm is a high tech environment for the ants. Based on the technique used by Nasa to examine life in a weightless environment. The ant farm is self supporting, the transparent gel provides the ants their food, water and shelter. The only thing you have to add to the ant farm (16.5 x 15.2 x 3.2 cm/ 6.3 x 5.9 x 1.2 inch) are the ants.

What about the ants?
The worker ants in the gel show how they collaborate and make a labyrinth together, like they do underground. The worker ant lifespan is from a few months up to a year. The age of the ants may vary. The worker ants that come with the ant-farm should live a few weeks up to half a year and are guaranteed to dig through the gel. When the ants die in the first two weeks or don't dig at all, we will send free replacements.
How long will the gel last?
The gel of the ant farm is a complete food supply for the ants and more then enough for the size of the ant family provided by Ant's Kingdom. Ants don't need a lot of nutrition and even dig up the waste of the gel to reuse it. We also offer gel refills in different colors for when you might want to start over.
Maintenance and care
The maintenance and care are simple:
- No need to add nutrition.
- Lift the top cover a few times a week for some fresh air.
- Remove condense and garbage if possible.

These are worker ants from South-Europe who are used to make corridors and rooms in their normal underground habitat. The ants will be send in a test tube. In the test tube they can survive about a week before they are placed in the ant farm. How to place the ants in the ant farm is explained in the enclosed instructions.

Ondanks een wat kleine bezetting door enkele doden tijdens het transport, verdient dit mierennest absoluut 5 sterren. De overgebleven werksters hebben zich na een rustige opstartfase langzaam maar zeker toegelegd op het graven van een tunnel. De verdeling van taken is goed zichtbaar, met herkenbaar gedrag zoals het afvoeren van gel en het houden van wacht bij het ‘kerkhof’.
De familie werksters is klein, maar georganiseerd en opvallend vredig. Het is een rustgevend, boeiend accessoire op mijn werkplek dat collega's ook nieuwsgierig maakt.
Tip:
Bij een kleine kolonie blijft de activiteit beperkt. Advies is om direct extra werksters bij te bestellen voor meer dynamiek en sneller graafresultaat.
Pluspunten:
- Compact nest, ideaal voor op een bureau
- Leuke observaties mogelijk: taakverdeling, rustperiodes, interacties
- Decoratief en tegelijk leerzaam
Minpunt:
- Klein aantal werksters leidt tot tragere activiteit, vooral als een aantal het transport niet overleefd.
- Overzetten vanuit de reageerbuis was lastig zonder ontsnappers
- Het smaakt naar meer ;-).
Top product ziet hoogwaardig en goed afgewerkt uit, Mieren doen het heel goed in de gel, gangen krijgen een futuristische look door weerkaatsing die transparant oogt. Ook geschikt voor jonge kinderen omdat het weinig onderhoud vergt.
Zeer tevreden over de miertjes. De kinderen vinden het super naar ze te kijken. Heel leerzaam! We hadden wel wat pech dat het onderste deel van de gel nog niet uitgehard bleek, maar dit konden we gelukkig snel oplossen. Door het goed te ventileren.
Ik was verbaasd met de hele set, kwaliteit is goed, heb 50 mieren extra besteld. Echt heel leuk om naar te kijken, we zijn heel blij mee. De gel is doorzichtig dus je kan ze aan het werk zien!
Mijn vriend vond het een geweldig cadeau. Nu hij wil meer haha
